Above and Beyond is the title of the band’s latest CD. Priced at £10 it is good value for money, particularly as 20% of the income will go to charity. The first track is a stirring rendition of the theme from the film 633 Squadron. Senior Concert Band members will remember this from the time we played it. Particularly the challenge to our Alto Sax players who had to sound like French Horns as we didn’t have any of those at the time.
Anyway, back to the CD. I won’t go through each track but there are 15 of them varying in style. “Bring Him Home”, a song from ‘Les Miserables’ is done particularly well with cornet as the solo instrument. Another track is “At The Close of Day”. This includes the them from one of my favourite hymn tunes, which is often sung to “The day thou gavest..” People of my vintage may recall that this tune was also used on Rick Wakeman’s 6 wives album.
ICB members will be interested in hearing track 2 “Pirates of the Carribean” as that is what we are working on at the moment. The CD also has 2 vocal numbers to add variety, a lively version of “Riverdance”, and “Crags of Tumbledown” features the bagpipes.
Only one grumble, having bought the CD and then ripping it onto my ipod, I found that the CD is not listed on the Gracenote database so had to type in all the details. Overall a good range of music, well played and well worth buying.
