Heard a 30 min programme on Radio 4 about the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain today. Absolutely brilliant! Not at all what you might think - and the subject of being stereotyped by the Ukulele was discussed.

They clearly have a lot of fun playing everything from classical through to punk and current pop and rock including playing with the likes of The Kaiser Chiefs. They remind me very much of the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra and Derek Hasted - those who’ve seen them will know what I mean and both orchestras play the theme tune to the Dick Barton detective series.

The BBC Radio 4 programme is available on BBC Play It Again until the 23rd August.

The homepage for the orchestra is at http://www.ukuleleorchestra.com/main/home.aspx and Wikipedia, as ever, has an entry.

They will be taking part in the Proms at the Albert Hall and can be heard on BBC Radio 3 at 22:00 on Tuesday 18th August.

Broadcast on Radio 3 Sundays 17:00-18:30

Discovering Music explores pieces of music in detail, providing a unique insight into the inner workings of a millennium of musical history. Programmes are either based around a featured work or cover a musical topic like melody, harmony or rhythm. The two main presenters are Charles Hazlewood and Stephen Johnson.

Sunday 26th April 2009 17:00
Stephen Johnson explores Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, a cantata for soli, choir, orchestra and organ written in 1926, playing excerpts and the entire work from a recording by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Karel Ancerl.
The text of the mass is in old Slavonic language: from an early age, Janacek had been passionate about the traditions of the Slavonic peoples.

Above and Beyond is the title of the band’s latest CD. Priced at £10 it is good value for money, particularly as 20% of the income will go to charity. The first track is a stirring rendition of the theme from the film 633 Squadron. Senior Concert Band members will remember this from the time we played it. Particularly the challenge to our Alto Sax players who had to sound like French Horns as we didn’t have any of those at the time.

Anyway, back to the CD. I won’t go through each track but there are 15 of them varying in style. “Bring Him Home”, a song from ‘Les Miserables’ is done particularly well with cornet as the solo instrument. Another track is “At The Close of Day”. This includes the them from one of my favourite hymn tunes, which is often sung to “The day thou gavest..” People of my vintage may recall that this tune was also used on Rick Wakeman’s 6 wives album.

ICB members will be interested in hearing track 2 “Pirates of the Carribean” as that is what we are working on at the moment. The CD also has 2 vocal numbers to add variety, a lively version of “Riverdance”, and “Crags of Tumbledown” features the bagpipes.

Only one grumble, having bought the CD and then ripping it onto my ipod, I found that the CD is not listed on the Gracenote database so had to type in all the details. Overall a good range of music, well played and well worth buying.

To the members of the ‘Perp Concert Band’

Hi everyone!

Here is a MP3 file for the Can-can All Parts (play all together) from “Orphous in the Underworld” by Offenbach.

If there are any suggestions such as velocities and change instruments etc, please contact me by E-mail to skoh@skoh.net.

Also, if you provide a blank CD, I will make a copy with the wave file for this music which has better quality of sound and you can play it with any CD player.

I hope this will help you with your practice.

For other parts and music, please see the following list of titles.

Have FUN!
