Dear Amateur Orchestra,

First of all, I apologise for sending an unsolicited email, but under the circumstances I hope you’ll forgive me! I help organise an annual residential orchestral course at Easter, and we still have a few vacancies. I was wondering whether any of your members might be interested?

The remaining vacancies are for two percussionists and violins, violas, double basses.
There are full scholarships available for student/young graduate violin and viola players. There is also a subsidised rate (50%) for students of other instruments (eg percussion/bass).

Would you be able to forward this email to them please?

Please also accept my apologies if I’ve already sent you this email. I try not to send duplicates, but sometimes one slips past me.
Many thanks and best wishes,

Percussion and string vacancies at residential orchestral course—Easter 2012

The Easter Orchestra will be holding its annual course 10 – 16 April 2012, this year in Ellesmere, Shropshire.

We still have a few vacancies: two percussionists and violins, violas, double basses.

There are full scholarships available (worth over £400) for student /young graduate string players, and there is a subsidised rate (50%) for students of other instruments (ie percussion).

The repertoire will include Mahler Symphony No.7, Shostakovich Symphony No.7, Rautavaara Symphony No. 8, Ravel La Valse, Bartók Concerto for Orchestra, Mozart opera arias etc, etc.

All gear is provided for percussionists.

Heard a 30 min programme on Radio 4 about the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain today. Absolutely brilliant! Not at all what you might think - and the subject of being stereotyped by the Ukulele was discussed.

They clearly have a lot of fun playing everything from classical through to punk and current pop and rock including playing with the likes of The Kaiser Chiefs. They remind me very much of the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra and Derek Hasted - those who’ve seen them will know what I mean and both orchestras play the theme tune to the Dick Barton detective series.

The BBC Radio 4 programme is available on BBC Play It Again until the 23rd August.

The homepage for the orchestra is at http://www.ukuleleorchestra.com/main/home.aspx and Wikipedia, as ever, has an entry.

They will be taking part in the Proms at the Albert Hall and can be heard on BBC Radio 3 at 22:00 on Tuesday 18th August.
